MITA recently attended a presentation on utility damage investigations and root cause analysis at the MISS DIG 811 Great Lakes Expo. The information presented was found extremely valuable, particularly as our industry continues to focus on reducing utility damage and learning from incidents as they occur.
Building on that effort, MISS DIG 811 is seeking stakeholders in damage investigation to participate in a specialized workshop focused on improving how our industry investigates and learns from utility damage incidents.
This collaborative workshop will bring together industry professionals to help develop a practical tool that excavators can use to better assess, investigate, and document the root causes of utility damages. The goal is to create a consistent and effective approach to incident analysis, corrective actions, and continuous improvement.

Utility Damage Root Cause Analysis Workshop
Date: July 23, 2026
Time: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM (EST)
Location: MISS DIG 811 Training Facility, Lansing Office

- Developing Consistent Investigation and Documentation Practices
Why Attend?
This workshop provides an opportunity for excavators, safety professionals, supervisors, and damage prevention personnel to directly influence the development of an industry resource that can improve investigations, identify contributing factors, and strengthen damage prevention efforts throughout Michigan.
Many companies investigate utility damages internally, but few have a standardized process for identifying underlying causes and implementing corrective actions. This workshop is designed to help address that gap and create resources that can benefit the entire industry.
MITA encourages members who are involved in utility damage investigations, safety management, field operations, or damage prevention programs to participate.
Please consider nominating a representative from your organization to attend this important industry workshop.
