Many of you are aware that scam artists have and continue to circulate fraudulent letters that appear to be from the USDOT requesting specific bank account information. However, this year the scam artists have taken a different avenue to solicit information — email.
The USDOT’s Office of Inspector General (OIG) has recently informed MITA that fraudulent emails appearing to be from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have been sent to contractors asking for bank information or payment of fees. So far only contractors working on airport projects have received these emails, but they may spill over into other segments of the construction industry. As with the USDOT letters, these FAA emails are fraudulent.
If you receive any document (letter, fax, email) asking for your financial information, be wary, it may be a scam artist searching for access to your money.
