MDOT recently has tried to improve worker safety by placing orange markings on eastbound I-96 on their Flex Route project between Kent Lake Road and I-275 near metro Detroit. The markings are placed in the beginning crossover shift and the end crossover shift on the skip lines and right edge lines.
Work zone safety is such an important issue, and you would think that we would not have to be doing this kind of stuff at this point just to move the needle and get compliance in work zones. But this is our reality, and you can help researchers determine if the orange markings increase driver awareness of a work zone, decrease speeds and increase worker safety.
