MITA continues to be concerned with the ongoing problems associated with the misuse of the 005 response code on MISS DIG tickets, specifically situations where locators indicate that contact has been made with the excavator when, in fact, no such communication has occurred.
Accurate communication between locators and excavators is critical to ensuring safe excavation practices and maintaining compliance with Michigan’s damage prevention requirements. When response codes do not reflect actual field conditions, it creates unnecessary risk for your crews and undermines the integrity of the system.
To better understand the scope of this issue and advocate effectively on your behalf, we are asking members to provide the following when these situations occur:
• Screenshots of the MISS DIG ticket showing the 005 response
• Any supporting documentation, such as emails, call logs, notes, etc.
• A brief description of what actually occurred in the field
This information will allow us to identify trends, engage with stakeholders, and work toward corrective action where needed.
Please send all documentation directly to gregbrooks@thinkmita.org. If you would prefer to discuss a situation before submitting, feel free to reach out to him at 517-507-2531.
Your feedback is essential. The more documentation we can gather, the stronger our position will be in ensuring accountability and improving the process for everyone involved. Thank you for your continued commitment to safe and compliant excavation practices.
If you have any questions, please contact Greg Brooks at gregbrooks@thinkmita.org or 517-507-2531.
