In Memoriam – Mike McElroy

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mike McElroy.

The following obituary was provided by MITA member Florence Cement Company:

Born July 21,1940, in Elmira, New York, and raised in Curwensville, Pennsylvania, Mike (Mac) McElroy entered the great Field of Dreams surrounded by his family on Sunday, March 10, 2019.

He is survived by his wife, Bridget, to whom he was married for 26 years. Together, they blended a family of nine children, managing a League of Their Own: Megan, David (and Debbie), Kammy, Tim (and Michele), Kerry (and Terry Barnes), Caelan (and John Soma), Christopher (and Piper), Michael (and Tiffany), and Nicholas (and Lindsay). In addition to his wife and starting lineup of children, he is survived by a Sandlot of 13 grandchildren: Mackenzie, Natalie, Jacob, Conor, Joey, Ellie, Alaina, Danny, Luscia, Shannon, Maren, Paige, and Clay; two siblings: Martin and Molly; a wide fan base of in-laws, and several nieces and nephews. His passing leaves a huge hole in the hearts of all those who loved him.

He was pre-deceased by his first wife of 27 years, Geri; his parents, William and Ursula; his siblings, Dennis, Philip, and Patricia.

Aside from his commitment and love for his family, Mike was a dedicated civil engineer, recognized for his leadership in the heavy construction industry. He worked for nearly 57 years in the field, starting McElroy Consulting after concluding 39 years with the John Carlo Company. He most recently worked with Florence Cement Company as a consultant, where his expertise was highly valued. In 2014, he received an Honorary Member Award from the Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association (MITA). This award honors those who have made outstanding contributions to the road, bridge, and underground construction industry.

Mike was a man of integrity, true to his word, and willing to help anyone with anything. He and his family were among the founding members of the neighborhood association the Vinsetta Yacht Club. He enjoyed all sports, but his favorites were Tiger baseball, Spartan football and basketball, and, especially golfing with his friends and children. One of his last shining moments was being surrounded by his family and rooting the Spartans on to their 2019 Big Ten victory.
