Industry Mental Health Survey – Participation Request

Mental health in the construction industry has been a growing topic as we continue to learn more about the clear issues presented and the impacts on the construction workforce.  MITA has been investigating possible ways to help, and as part of those efforts, having a better understanding of where things currently stand here in Michigan can be beneficial with understanding potential next steps.  MITA is requesting members to consider participating in the national survey presented below, and the results will be shared with MITA.

Please click here for a link to participate and for more information about the survey.  We appreciate any participation that may help.  Please respond by December 30th, 2024.

Some statistics to consider:

•In the U.S., 40% of adults reported struggling with mental health or substance use and 11% of adults reported seriously contemplating suicide.

•In the U.S., people are more likely to die from suicide than an automobile accident or by homicide. (The U.S. loses 47,500 people per year to suicide, 38,800 to automobile crashes, and 19,141 to homicide.)

•The construction industry has one of the highest rates of suicide at 53.3 per 100,000 U.S. workers. (That rate is four times greater than the national average and five times greater than that of all other construction fatalities combined.)

•A recent national construction workers’ mental health survey found that 36% of the responses agreed or strongly agreed, “My job is more stressful than I had ever imagined,” and 32% agreed or strongly agreed, “I fear that the amount of stress in my job will make me physically or mentally ill.”
