Legislative Update: Work Zone Safety, Water Diversion and SRF Project List

MITA has been busy working in recent weeks on a number of important issues affecting the heavy construction industry. Bulletins have recently been posted on the ongoing proposed changes to the Michigan Business Tax and MITA has asked members to contact their legislators (click here). There have been several other issues in the spotlight as well.

Water Diversion Bills Being Debated

MITA has been meeting with various workgroups to discuss proposed water diversion bills. Legislation is pending in both the House and the Senate which could potentially effect the industry in the dewatering area specifically. Of particular focus for MITA is ensuring that the seasonal and grandfathering exemptions remain, which would allow most construction projects to avoid the proposed new requirements.

Work Zone Safety Issues Pending in the House

MITA recently met with Rep. Pam Byrnes to talk about work zone safety issues. As a result, legislation was introduced which would reduce unnecessary signage by eliminating the “Fines Doubled in Work Zones” and “Injure or Kill a Worker” signs.

In addition, MITA has been working with Rep. Byrnes on providing greater statutory authority in cases where a driver disobeys the direction of a construction zone traffic regulator.
