What is the MISS DIG 811 Liaison Program?
MISS DIG 811 has identified communication, or the lack thereof, as a source of issue within the areas of facility location and damage prevention. To combat that difficulty, they have created a new liaison program. The MISS DIG 811 Liaison Program is an outreach initiative that connects local communities, contractors, municipalities, and utility companies with the MISS DIG 811 system. The goal is to promote safe digging practices and improve communication between stakeholders and the notification system that protects underground utilities across the state.
Why It Matters:
Every year, thousands of underground utility damages occur due to one reason or another. The Liaison Program aims to reduce these incidents through education, training, and direct support, ensuring everyone involved in digging projects understands their responsibilities under Michigan’s Public Act 174.
Key Services Offered by Liaisons:
-Free educational presentations and safety training
-In-person or virtual meetings for municipalities, excavators, and utility owners
-Assistance in understanding ticketing processes (e.g., normal, emergency, and design tickets)
-Support with resolving disputes or clarifying utility marking procedures
-Updates on legislative or procedural changes affecting excavation
Who Can Participate?
Anyone involved in excavation, construction, or utility work, including contractors, public agencies, facility owners, and community members, can benefit from liaison support.
