Last Of Gov’s $3.5B Road Bonds Given The Green Light (MIRS, 4/18/24)

The State Transportation Commission approved an amendment to the Rebuilding Michigan bonds that would allow for raising the last of the $3.5 billion for Michigan Department of Transportation projects.

The $3.5 billion would go toward nearly $4.3 billion required for 45 projects on bridges, trunklines and freeways around the state. The more than $700 million in bonds would be issued in late summer or early fall for six remaining projects in Genesee, Oakland and Wayne counties.

There were originally 50 projects with a price tag of more than $3.5 billion.

Five projects were removed from the list, including a bridge replacement for east and west Interstate 196 over the Grand River, Interstate 94 reconstruction from 8 Mile Road to 11 Mile Road, a bridge on Interstate 194 over the Kalamazoo River and a portion of Interstate 96 in Livingston County.

The commission approved extending the bond program for one year beyond the initial December 2023 deadline in November (See “MDOT Approves Extension Of Rebuilding Michigan Bond Program,” 11/13/23).
