MITA MEMBER SURVEY: PROJECTED JOB LOSS IN HEAVY CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY FOR CONTRACTORS, SUPPLIERS, AND ENGINEERING FIRMS!

The fight for long-term, sustainable infrastructure funding continues in Lansing as our road funding cliff looms. As policymakers debate the topic, one of the most compelling arguments for finding a solution quickly is the potential job loss in the industry if lawmakers do nothing. The 2025 / 2026 fiscal year budget for road funding, which starts on October 1, 2025, is basically flat from previous years.

After that, the state falls into a large road funding revenue cliff. Funding for Governor Whitmer’s bonding program and the federal Infrastructure, Investments, and Jobs Act (IIJA) all expire after 2026. The state estimates that revenues will decrease by over $2 billion overnight and remain that way indefinitely in the transportation budget. This decrease will obviously lead to job loss across the entire industry. Please consider what will occur in private markets as contractors look for work outside of what they may traditionally bid and all potential jobs lost, not just the field.

In an effort to convince lawmakers to pass a long-term solution and avoid our funding cliff, we are surveying MITA members to determine their potential job loss over the next three years based on declining revenue projections. Your information will be used in aggregate, not individually. MITA will collect the data to present to the Legislature and public to demonstrate the toll that inaction will have on Michigan families.

This is being debated as we speak, and your information is essential and urgent. Please complete the survey to the best of your knowledge by Wednesday, February 12, 2025. We will use this information in our advocacy immediately.
