MITA Urgent Legislative Update

MITA Action Alert: Contact Your State Representative

There has never been a more important time for you to contact your State Representative and urge him/her to approve road funding.  Please click here to find contact information for your legislator, and make the call TODAY!

Please let your legislator know that fixing Michigan’s roads needs to be the legislature’s #1 issue during the lame duck session.  You can remind them that the cost to fix our roads is only going to climb higher if action is not taken now.  Michigan motorists already pay $357 in unnecessary car repairs due to poor roads, and they can only expect that amount to increase as Michigan’s roads and bridges continue to deteriorate.

MITA in Action:  Senate Defeats Bill To Reduce Truck Weights

MITA’s aggressive efforts to defeat SB 1150, which would have reduced Michigan’s gross weight limit for trucks, paid off today with the defeat of the bill by a vote of 15-22, with most Republicans voting in opposition.

The bill would have reduced the current 164,000-pound gross weight limit to 80,000 pounds.  It has long been debated whether Michigan’s 164,000-pound limit spread over 11 axles is a major factor in the deteriorating condition of the state’s roads.  Defenders of the limit have said Michigan’s limit actually means fewer pounds per axle than in other states that allow spreading 80,000 pounds over five axles.

Three Republicans voted with all 12 Democrats in favor of the bill: Sen. Patrick Colbeck (R-Canton Township), Sen. Tory Rocca (R-Sterling Heights) and Sen. Jack Brandenburg (R-Harrison Township).  But that still left the bill five votes short of passage.
