New Executive Order Extends Vehicle Registration, Driver’s Licenses and CDL Expirations

As anticipated, Governor Whitmer has issued an Executive Order extending identification and vehicle registration expirations while the Secretary of State branch offices are closed. The Governor temporarily extended commercial vehicle registrations set to expire on or after March 1 until June 30, 2020. The order also extended driver’s licenses, license plates, and commercial driver’s licenses (CDL) set to expire between March 1 and May 31 until June 30,2020.

The temporary extension does not apply to suspended or revoked driver’s licenses. The order suspends penalties for driving with a recently expired, but otherwise valid driver’s license. MITA staff worked closely with the Secretary of State office, as well as staff within the Governor’s office, to work through some of these issues as MITA members continue to construct critical infrastructure projects.
