After several months of negotiations, MITA has been successful in gaining the approval of the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) for the nighttime movement of over length milling equipment. On June 11, 2010, a one-year MDOT pilot program for nighttime movement of over length milling equipment begins. Click here for a copy of the MDOT letter that details the requirements.
The pilot program only applies to milling machines used for the construction of public highways when the following criteria are met:
1. The contractor has a current extended transportation permit for oversize construction equipment.
2. The contractor has an active highway construction project.
3. Travel will be limited to freeways and a five-mile access to and from a freeway on a state trunkline highway.
4. The special conditions for nighttime travel will be limited to milling equipment that will be used on a highway construction contract..
To submit for participation in this pilot program, an email request should be sent to Robert Whaley at whaleyr@michigan.gov and should include your company name, extended permit number(s), and a list of the MDOT project(s) the milling work will be performed on (include the project limits, location and MDOT job number). The nighttime travel will require that a pilot car and additional lights be utilized for these movements.
This one year pilot program is set to expire on June 11, 2011. Once complete, it is MITA’s goal to work with MDOT to extend the program to allow for the nighttime movement of other over length construction equipment.
