Part 35 is finally here, sort of. Construction Safety Standard Part 35 is a new standard that covers confined spaces in construction. It was adopted from Federal OSHA by MIOSHA and was filed with the Secretary of State on Oct. 22, 2015. Part 35 took effect in Michigan on Oct. 29, 2015.
What does this mean for you and your company? Part 35 now adds a few more processes to a company’s confined space program. MITA is working diligently on interpretation and guidance for the industry and will continue to provide updates as they become available.
After speaking with a representative from Construction Safety, MITA was informed that MIOSHA safety officers will be trained on the new Part 35 on December 1, 2015. While citations can be issued, conventional wisdom says that training and education will be the theme for the winter, and all contractors should have a new program implemented by the start of spring work. MITA is reviewing and updating our online accident prevention program, along with developing new training classes. MITA will also be providing in-depth training programs for foremen, site supervisors and company management on the new confined space standard.
