Should Speed Limits Be Increased For Heavy Trucks?

For several years, the Michigan Legislature has been debating, and, ultimately, changing certain speed limits on Michigan’s roads. Not without controversy, certain speed limits have been raised where it is safe and possible to do so. Recently, policy makers have discussed potentially raising speed limits for heavy trucks.

MITA has been asked to give input on increasing speed limits for heavy trucks, as well as which weight or types of trucks would be appropriate to consider. Some argue that increasing truck speed could avoid the challenges of differing speeds of vehicles on the highway. Studies have also shown that a high percentage of accidents are caused by varying speeds between vehicles.

We would like to hear your thoughts on the topic. Should speed limits be increased for heavy trucks? Are there certain trucks that would be more appropriate than others? Are there certain safety considerations to be kept in mind when debating this?
