Stakeholder Engagements and Pre-Bid Training for Digital Delivery Pilot

MDOT plans to let their second Digital Delivery pilot in September 2025. The contract documents will be a 3D Building Information Modeling (BIM) model in place of a 2D plan set for all proposed work including roadway and structures. The pilot is the replacement of a single bridge, M-53 over Greenman Creek, and associated road work in Greenleaf Township, Huron County. The project length is 0.1 miles. The proposed structure is a precast box culvert with the option to cast in place. All design information will be accessible through the model as 3D or 2D information or as supplemental documents accessible from the model such as pdfs and spreadsheets.

To engage both the contractor and fabricator community and assist potential bidders and their subcontractors, MDOT is providing a series of stakeholder engagement sessions plus two training sessions on the 3D model. The first training session is optional and tentatively planned for July 2025. The second training session will be part of a mandatory pre-bid meeting and will take place in August 2025.

Attending the stakeholder engagements is highly recommended but not required to bid on the contract. These engagements are an opportunity to provide input and gain expertise as the industry moves to standardize digital deliverables. Contractors who do not intend to bid on this contract are also welcome to attend stakeholder engagements, as the material may be relevant on future projects. Free software for viewing the 3D model will be made available to attendees of stakeholder engagements and potential bidders.

Working from 3D bridge models is new to most bidders. These engagement and training sessions are available to provide resources and support for potential and future bidders. The proposed engagement schedule is as follows with the option to add additional sessions if needed:
