Temporary Signs – Proper Method to Lay Down

There are numerous times throughout a construction project when temporary signs (placed on temporary sign stands) are put into and out of service.  When they are out of service, MDOT has observed improper lay down procedures and is requesting that this practice be stopped immediately as it compromises the safety of the motoring public.

The proper lay down procedure should be as follows:

1. REMOVE the feet.
2. Lay the sign with the legs parallel to and away from the direction of traffic.
3. Place the sign face up so that it is visible during hours of darkness.
4. When removing a sign cover and storing, the sign cover must also be lying flat on the ground and it cannot lean up against the existing sign.
5. Please review section 812.03.D.1 Temporary Signs for additional details.
