The state announced that 67 communities have been approved to receive grants to assist with the completion of needed water quality improvement efforts.
In 2005, MITA helped write and pass legislation creating a $40 million clean water grant program. The “S2” grants were designed to cover local government costs of planning and design necessary for construction loan funding from the state’s clean water revolving fund programs.
The initial planning and design costs were often a major financial hurdle for local units of government, preventing them from moving forward on major water projects. The S2 grants cover up to 90 percent of the costs, thus removing the hurdle. These grants were apparently successful, as the state recently announced almost $600 million in project applications – an almost threefold increase from recent years.
