Tuesday is a big day to help determine the direction of our state for the next four years. MITA has invested much time and resources to elect leaders who are committed to building and maintaining Michigan’s infrastructure.
In addition to the governor, attorney general and secretary of state, all 148 state legislators will be on the ballot. Voters will vote for a number of local offices as well as five ballot proposals in Michigan.
There are several ballot proposals likely to affect the heavy construction industry:
Proposal 2 — Eliminates the ability of public institutions to use affirmative action programs in hiring and contracting.
Proposal 4 — Restricts the ability of government to use eminent domain for the purpose of private redevelopment.
Proposal 5 — Requires the state to increase education spending by over $700 million next year alone, with state taxpayers picking up the future tab for increased costs in the teacher pension program. Those costs are expected to reach over $1 billion a year for the state in the next decade and likely reduce aid that local governments use to fund infrastructure projects.
