Recently, MITA joined the County Road Association of Michigan and several other local governmental groups in a press conference to introduce a new study commissioned on electric vehicles and their impact on road funding. Throughout 2023, MITA will continue to churn the issue of equitable, sustainable transportation funding through the media and this study is a part of that initiative. The group held a press conference January 17 in Lansing, and MITA’s Executive Vice President Rob Coppersmith was among the featured speakers. The report shows that the state is losing out on at least $30 million annually and could potentially lose up to $500 million in revenues by the year 2030. It also looked at what mechanism could be put in place in order for electric vehicles to pay their fair share of user fees that are dedicated to building and maintaining our state’s roads and bridges.
