Temporary traffic control signs are essential for protecting workers, drivers, pedestrians, and the public around construction zones. Signs such as “Road Work Ahead,” “Road Closed,” “Detour,” and “Flagger Ahead” help warn the public of changing roadway conditions and direct traffic safely through or around work areas. Due to recent high winds and inclement weather, several traffic control devices may have shifted. These items should be inspected and, if necessary, repositioned or replaced to maintain site safety.
Employee & Contractor Responsibilities
•Ensure signs are placed according to the approved traffic control plan
•Verify signs are visible, upright, clean, and not blocked from view
•Inspect barricades and signage regularly throughout working
•Report damaged, missing, or moved signs immediately
•Remove or cover signs when work is complete or conditions change
•Never leave conflicting or unnecessary signs in place
Common Hazards
•Drivers receiving little or no warning before entering a work zone
•Confusing or incorrect detour information
•Missing barricades or improperly closed roadways
•Poor visibility during night work or bad weather
•Increased risk of struck-by incidents
Safety Reminder
Improper or missing traffic control signs can create serious hazards for both workers and the public. Every employee has a responsibility to help maintain a safe and clearly marked work zone at all times.
