Reminder – Work Zone Traffic Control Equipment Must Meet NCHRP 350

The prime contractor is responsible for ensuring that all work zone traffic control equipment is NCHRP 350 compliant per section 922.01 of the 2003 Standard Specifications for Construction and the contract documents. Temporary sign panels, supports, cones, drums, and Type III barricades must meet the NCHRP 350 crashworthy requirements.

MDOT requires a certification letter from the supplier stating that the temporary traffic control devices are in compliance. A few recent site inspections have found that the prime contractor had this letter on file, but the traffic control equipment was not constructed in strict compliance with contract documents.

The prime contractor is responsible and must ensure that the supplier of the equipment is supplying compliant equipment.
