According to MDOT’s Frequently Used Special Provision for Temporary Concrete Barrier, all temporary concrete barrier (TCB) in service after December 31, 2011, must be NCHRP 350 compliant.
MDOT currently allows the use of “old” TCB sections manufactured prior to September 1, 2006 that meet the requirements of Standard Plan R-52 and subsection 922.03.E of the Standard Specifications for Construction (i.e. 20′ sections retrofitted with a third cable loop) until December 31, 2011.
After December 31, 2011, all TCB in service must be NCHRP 350 compliant and also meet the additional MDOT requirements detailed the special provision.
If you are bidding a MDOT project that will span the December 31, 2011 date, be advised that if you start the project with the “old” Standard R-52 TCB sections in service, you will be required to replace that barrier on December 31, 2011 with NCHRP 350 complaint barrier at no additional costs.
